Was getting a haircut today and while waiting noticed a cover title on a magazine "Men's Journal", Sept. 2017.
"The Doomed Voyage of the S.S. El Faro". Sunk by hurricane Joaquin in Oct. 2015.
Not military but I think some of you may be interested in big ships too. Pages 60-67, recounts the last hours of
the El Faro as reconstructed from the ship's black box voice recorder.
Blame is placed with the U.S. Jones Act shipping companies who penalize captains' careers if they spend more
money than allocated for fuel by diverting the ship's route; in this case, going to a more protected route would
take an extra 6 hours and $5000 in fuel. Blame also placed on the captain, who was described by others as
lazy, "not a detail man". Captain returned to bridge 3 hours before ship sinking, after spending 8 hours in his
cabin. Perfect chain of circumstance and error.
