I second that recommendation for Thurman Miller's book. Fascinating guy.
If you can believe it, the guy even has a website:

I found the book after a little digging just now. It came from the Dollar Tree store, $1.00; and I think it's a definitive narrative, footnoted.    "Receiving intelligence from a captured prisoner of war that a detachment of Japanese bunkered down along the Matanikau might be induced to surrender, on August 12 Colonel Goettge led a large patrol to investigate. His patrol carried no Browning automatics, no radio, no grenades… they spotted what may have been a white flag of surrender – or the Japanese flag, with its Rising Sun hidden in its white folds for lack of wind that day…"      It WAS already known to combat veterans that Japanese did not ( at this point in the war ) surrender and sometimes pretended surrender in order to take out a few more Yanks. So this was a naïve, poorly thought out mission. Three out of 25 survived; no one swam to summon help; they swam to save their own lives. The bodies of the dead were dismembered and left on the beach; subsequent U.S. patrols were ordered not to divert to collect remains.    "There have been many attempts to locate the remains of Frank Goetgge and his team, none successful. An anthropological expdedition in 2008 used ground-penetrating radar and other high-tech instruments, but since 1942 the coast has been heavily developed and excavated, and typhoons have washed away much of the beach…."    I think the book is a keeper; well worth the $1.00 "Earned In Blood – My Journey from Old-Breed Marine to the Most Dangerous Job in America", 2013. "Thurman Miller, a native of Otsego, West Virginia, served as a gunnery sergeant with the 1st Marine Division in WWII and was one of the first marines ashore on Guadalcanal. He fought in several other historic South Pacific battles…."    Not only is this a good history, but it's a very human story. The author went back to Appalachia to take work as a coal miner – "the most dangerous job". He suffered recurring physical health problems and psychological breakdowns and many times was treated by veteran's agencies and doctors as a deadbeat malingerer just  looking to live off the dole. Reverting to a simple life doing physical work on a farm recovered his health; he went on to learn electrician work and escaped the mine work he hated.   -Hue ______________________________________________________________
