If you don't think dust during a dust storm carries a lot of static 
electricity, drive through a howling dust storm sometime with your AM radio 
on.  It is just like being on the receiving of a pending lightning strike. 
That's why I have one of those gas discharge lightning aresters ahead of my 
one HF solid state rig which is in my Land Rover.  Being a glow in the dark 
radio person I have no idea how the solid state rigs can be protected, but I 
would think theyre is a way.
