Well, the TCK-4 which Robert "advised" me to buy arrived today, being brought over by the
very good Scott Gray W7IZ from Oregon. He also brought me two RBC receivers, thinking
that they were different receivers since one is gray and the other black. I'd rather have had
at least one RBB, but maybe after I restore these, I can trade one for an RBB.
As he mentioned, the paint (typical GE paint-job) is pretty much gone from the TCK.
However, one VERY nice find was that someone, obviously, had this on the air at some time
in the past. There is a very robust power supply built into the bottom under the bottom most
deck. It has at least one pair of 866s in it, a HUGE HV transformer, other smaller
transformers, chokes, etc. and it looks commercially made. If it was made by a ham, he must
have been some sort of engineer type. As I said, it LOOKS llke a commercially made job. It
has been installed and connected so that all the front-panel controls work with it. There is
also a small panel to the left which has a key jack in it and some other local controls.
Whoever had this thing obviously put a lot of thought and work into it.
As soon as it warms up a bit here, I am going to repaint the panels with black wrinkle. In the
meantime, I will begin dismantling it and refurbishing it.
It is also far smaller than I had envisioned.
Many of the original tubes are still in it, although both 813s are gone. I have plenty of
spares, and recently bought 4 ea brand new 837s.
I can hardly wait!!! This is really exciting for me. I've always wanted a big Navy transmitter.
It is even more impressive than the BC-610s I have used in the past. I am very pleased.
Thanks to all of you for the advice and help so far. I may be calling on you some more in the
future.
