Actually, you have a good solution there.  In repainting Heathkit big amps which are wrinkle/crinkle finish, I found the best way was to use the Krylon brand of black rattle-can wrinkle paint to get the texture then use the proper top coat to finish and make it greenish.  


So, with so, so many varieties in the OD color world, it only makes sense to wrinkle it first then apply the proper OD color as a top coat.  You do have to apply several very thin coats of the top-coat to preserve the wrinkle. Very thin and multiple coats seems to work fine.   My Heathkit projects came out almost indistinguishable from the original paint texture.  I made several tests before I jumped into the Heathkit project.  I did find that slightly more paint that creates a rougher texture worked a bit better because the top-coat didn't reduce the wrinkle texture as much.  


If you use light coats of the wrinkle paint, which creates a nice wrinkle finish, tends to disappear when you top-coat, thus the reason for heavier wrinkle.
