This all sounds too much like the “Pueblo (AGER-2)” intendent in 1968 where in the words of the Great Leader:
Pueblo an armed spy ship of the US which conducting espionage acts in the territorial water of the DPRK and was captured by its heroic navy in January 1968.
You can see a link to this and other acts of blatant American aggression offending the peace loving people of the DPRK at their web page that list national museums at:
http://www.korea-dpr.com/museums.html
All propaganda aside, I use to have a link to a web page that had a couple dozen pictures that were taken by people who have visited the museum ship but am unable to come up with that right now. The majority of surveillance equipment consisted of R-390 receivers, recorders and Watkins Johnson gear intended for identifying VHF/UHF comms and radar frequencies.
The late sixties was a bad time to be in signal intelligence, first the attack on the USS Liberty by the IDF off the Sinai Peninsula with the loss of 34 crew members and then the capture of the Pueblo, one crew member died on the Pueblo and the eighty three or so crew member had to suffer thru eleven months of “hospitality ‘of the DPRK but were eventually returned to the states.
In the case of the USS Liberty Captain McGonagle received the Medal of Honor for his actions. It was awarded at the Washington Navy Yard by the Secretary of the Navy in an unpublicized ceremony. After nearly forty years a Silver Star was awarded to Terry Halbardier who braved machine-gun and cannon fire to repair a damaged antenna that restored communications to the fleet, quite an honor for an ET. There is also a memorial at the National Cryptologic Museum for the 34 killed.
Apologies were sent by Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, Foreign Minister Abba Eban, and Efraim Evron. Within 48 hours of the event Israel offered to compensate the victims and their families. Some controversy still exist today as to the cause of the event.
Google the ships for yourselves and it will give you an idea of the sometimes horrific Incidents that can occur with being a “spook”. It’s not all tedium and long hours copying code groups or pulse repetition rates.

At risk of being pegged as “negative” ( which i will admit to, anyway ), i’d recommend he get a real job, and forget novels, of which there is
a vast oversupply anyway. Today’s new novel, tomorrow’s remainder table, then the recycle bin.
