[Milsurplus] Harmonic question

This is not a trick answer, altho i won’t hazard a theoretical explanation, except maybe that the RF device creates at its plate or collector
the fundamental and a series of overtones, which are each individually modulated. A doubler, or multiiplier, of one modulated frequency
or overtone WOULD give the unintelligible result you describe.
Remember the SWL DX articles in the old radio magazines that noted AM station harmonics heard on the low SW frequencies?
I just recalled one broadcast effort by some high school friends of mine. The second harmonic got out better than the fundamental,
and that's what got them in trouble.

What would a nearby listener hear at say, the third or fifth harmonic,
assuming a good strength carrier at that frequency is present at his
receiver?
Is the bandwidth of the sidebands 3x or 5x, so all that's heard is
incomprehensible splatter?
This is not a trick question. The textbooks don't address this at all.
