Very interesting.  There is, however, a minor error of omission in the 
account of the crash.  At least according to my father-in-law who was there that 
day in January, 1945 and witnessed the crash.  According to him, while 
having lunch in the O-club the pilot made a bet with someone (or more likely 
with several someones) that his new P-61B could "climb Mt Cyclops".  He almost 
made it.
