So, i'm guessing the receiver has a 90 degree adapter attached to its tuning cable connector - i don't see curved or coiled tuning cable near the receiver ?
To Ken's post, i'd say, on training aircraft of this size, the flight crew never had to touched the tuning controls anyway.

With that short a cable, why not just use a tuning knob right on the receiver?
It's a good question, Hue. Looking through my photos, it seems obvious that the receiver wasn't always in an installed position to have the front panel accessible to the pilot or copilot, especially in one or two place fighters and fighter/bombers. Often it was to the right of the pilot and the tuning head on the fuselage at right angles to the front of the receiver. See attached photo of the SNJ-4 in the NASM storage facility.
