[Milsurplus] RTTY converters...

I am "researching" this for a friend. 

I know that the military used many different RTTY converters over the past 70 years or 
more, and am very curious if there is a complete listing of the type, model numbers, where 
and when used, etc.

I am particularly interested in those which used tubes.

I remember one which had 4 large knobs across the front, was quite large, and included 
some sort of motor-driven signal-tracking system, but don't remember the CV- number. Also, 
as I remember it, that particular one was very unreliable.

Can anyone help with this?
