I used to have a pair of BC-611s that were also painted gray and wondered
why. There are several Navy facilities here in the Los Angeles area but I
no longer have these radios so can't provide any other information on them.

I don't know anything specifically about the BC-1000's but would give 10:1
odds that they were in use by the Navy aboard ships or smaller amphibs.
Around 1950, someone high enough up in probably BUSHIPS got a wild hair and
decreed that all radio equipment aboard ships and landing craft undergoing
overhaul would be repainted haze gray. Some of the Navy Yards doing the
work made new nameplates (like the Army's Lexington Signal Depot did) and
some didn't. Apparently the San Francisco Navy Yard (or whatever it was
called in 1950) was one of the latter.
This was done to RBA/B/C, TCS, RT-66/67/68, RT-174/5/6. etc.

Good Day all
I've had these gray BC 1000's for some time and wondered why they were
painted gray.
Were they for the Navy or some other special use. The s/n on the data plate
is odd , at least to me as it's "6613 SF"
What's odd is the "SF" . I had been told the SF meant Special Forces , but
seriously doubt that.
I live here in the San Francisco Bay area and wondered if it meant San
Francisco but in what connection to the City.
I've heard of other gray 1000's out there but never why they were painted
gray. I somewhat doubt is was a Navy
Post war repaint or even if it was connected with the Navy.
Anyone know why the gray painted BC 1000's ??
Thanks
Paul
