[Milsurplus] More on the YG system

I've read that the directional antenna for this system was called the 'Hayrake' because of its similar design. I've seen pix of both planar & paraboloid antennas on top of carrier masts, so the directional beam would have a considerable ERP thanks both to the antenna gain & its height above the water line.
I think that there is some confusion about Admiral Mitscher's decision to turn on all the lights in his force as the pilots were returning in the dark after the Battle of the Philippine Sea. It wasn't because the returning pilots couldn't find the carriers as they had the homing gear. It was because night landings on darkened carriers was extremely risky. The added illumination made safer landings possible,
