Okay, i see. This is the only way the original reference transistor booster
circuit could work. Otherwise the transistor has no base current, and is not
conducting.

The base of the transistor is connected to the ground return
(source) of the FET, not to its drain circuit. Therefore, it's the current
flowing in the source that drives the base, rather than the more usual
configuration of the voltage swing at the drain.
