Don, et al,

You need to say what the suffix numbers are following the RBA-, RBB- or
RBC-. The statement in a previous post to the effect that all RBA's, RBB's and
RBC's are the same is only half right. SOP with the Navy, and only
ocassionally with the Signal Corps, was to incrament the number on the end of the
alpha-numeric nomenclature whenever they placed an additional order or whenever
the prime contractor was different. And to make matters worse, The LM is a
well known example, having 22 different Model Numbers with only a few actual
equipment changes. The TCS is the worst, having 16 model numbers with only
two actual hardware changes (or three if you count the fact that TCS through
most TCS-4 had no nameplates). Anyway, what you have to do is either get a
manual where the model number matches the nameplate on your set. Or check
for a suffix letter to the Navy Type Number assigned to the actual piece of
hardware. If the Navy Type Number matches that shown in the manual, then any
manual showing that exact NTN will work. Except with the RBA, you also have
to check for Field Changes. And with the RBB/RBC-5/6 manual, you definitely
need Change 1

The same thing generally applies to the RAK/RAL but I'm not as familiar
with them.

One rule of thumb that does apply to the RBA, RBB and RBC is that the odd
suffix number models are bench mount and the even ones rack mount (<BLANK>
being an even number). Which is why each of the NAVSHIPS manuals except for
the first one covers two model numbers, one bench and one rack.

Figuring out what you need isn't helped any by RCA's practice of using
photographs of earlier model sets in later manuals.

Replacing the Navy Type Concentric Connector with an SO-239 (which the Navy
did not do, they would have used Type-N) may not be as easy as saying it.
The chassis mount NT is rather large compared to the SO-239 and you are well
advised to use a drill press large enough to put the entire receiver under
if you are going to do it.
