Ray, what was your unpleasant experience with, i guess it was, the Racal RA-17 ?

I am only familiar with the civilian applications of that circuit idea. The Yaesu FRG-7 seems to have been the best, from what i heard from a friend who owned one.

The first civilian radio using it, the Barlows-Wadley XCR-30, was a first for SWLs in a portable radio giving 5 kHz resolution.

The Drake SSR-1, which i owned, was only ‘okay’.

The Radio Shack DX-300/ 302, which i also owned, were miserable!

The Heathkit HW-7800 was reviewed as a ‘dog’, and looks like junk besides.

I recall maybe 8 years ago a rack with 2 or 3 Racal RA-17s came up on Epay, and the seller was within driving distance, 2.5 hours, Eugene Oregon.
I thought hard about that one. But i dismissed the thought, having too much going on here, to be able to invest time in that --- fortunately.

I think it sold at a semi-bargain price.
