If you're interested in a WW2 memoir that has a combination of these
elements: Pacific War, U.S. Marines island combat, life on Pacific
island paradise-dumps, and WW2 radio, you may find this book as interesting
and fun as i did. I say 'humorous' because besides the
tragedies there are some genuinely funny incidents.
"Tales of a Feather Merchant" ; Perry Pollins, Merriam Press softcover,
2012. 150 pages; photographs.
The author went ashore with the 4th Joint Assault Signal Company at Peleliu,
and used Marine TBX and TBY radios on the beach.
As with most accounts, this memoir may leave you wishing for more details,
but that would be a much longer book. Rather than a
detailed log of the Pacific War, it's a collection of episodes from his war
experience. He also talks about the Native American 'code
talkers' and how much they shortened the otherwise two hour procedure to
code a message, send it, and have it decoded at the
destination.
Here's a quote:
"Newly arrived bazookas, radar locators in the forward observation posts
giving our armed naval vessels a point-of-fire reference, and
night vision riflescopes collectively improve our ability to destroy an
enemy as terrorizing as those dug into those limestone cliffs."
I wonder what exactly the 'radar locators' refers to. What is that?
This little - known book is well worth its modest price.
