The auction site gets a commission on whatever the “sold” price is. If that is a sale to a
shadow bidder, it’s an expensive way to do things. If there is a pattern of high bids being
canceled (for buyer or seller) that attracts notice. Any deal that actually logs as “sold”
likely is a real transaction.
