At the Puyallup hamfest i saw something unusual among the unusuals: an RU-GF
AC supply - the "small model".
Yes, there is a "large model", and there are at least two Northwest
collectors with this 'large model'. The large
one is, as i understand it, a power supply that emulates a junction box, so
you use all the control boxes etc. that
an aircraft or vehicle RUGF installation does. This 'small model' i saw is
not much wider than the GF transmitter
alone, and has but two connectors, one on each side, one for trans and one
for receiver. On the front panel there
are jacks for mic, headphone, and there are some knobs. As i recall, there's
something like a receiver switchbox
mounted to the top also. So you connects up your trans and rec to this thing
and you can operate the pair. These
units were made for troubleshooting in Navy shops.
I had known for going on 40 years that there was an RUGF AC supply. I was
offered one back around 1975 in
Seattle, but i "didn't want anything that large". I bought the manual alone;
the owner scrapped the supply.
I don't know just where the manual is, but when i rediscover it i'll provide
copies, or better, get it to Radionerds
online.
The price for the unit at the hamfest was $100. I was sorely tempted - i
still am. But then i thought, well, i'll have
to make up cables etc. and then, do i really want to assemble an RUGF set?
No - that's not in my Job#1 definition
right now. I still need to inventory what i have left of RUGF parts to
dispose of.
I had a BC-224-H at the hamfest, unmod, with dynamotor. I started to pull
the dynamotor before the hamfest
thinking i'd drop it in my BC-224-C, a model with no LF band, which models i
prefer. When i got to unscrewing
the spade lugs, tho, i saw that one spade lug was soldered down. So rather
than cut it, i left the dynamotor.
The deal was $120. It went to some kind of start-up museum. I'd probably
have preferred it not go to a museum
thing, but his money was green, and i was determined to move stuff. I did
sell 4 or 5 other BC-348s and one
GRC-9, also one great looking restorable BC-312 with some wires inside
snipped, for $20. I was determined to
take as little back with me as possible.
