Bob, good point, i hadn't thought about the aircraft use. The package format
of the radio does support that surmise - it's
so unlike the usual package footprint. I can only recall seeing one
definitely boat radio in that narrow-long format. I kind of
regreat passing it up, as i'm sure it went to a landfill. BTW, Brelonix was
another Seattle manufacturer which aimed at both
the marine and aviation markets.
We do know HF-AM went lived on longer in Alaska, probably canneries and
logging
camps used HF AM radios for a longer reach, and aircraft to communicate with
them.
It occurs to me now, that's something i'd like to know more about, the
frequencies used and so on. It is recent history,
so it shouldn't be that difficult.
I recall in Seattle talking to an Alaska fisherman. This was after Jan. 1977
when HF AM officially
ended. The guy was buying one of the many surplussed big Northern over-under
AM rigs to take back to Alaska with him. He told
me the "AM really reaches out" better. Not strictly true, and he probably
found it increasing hard to find people to talk to, but
old ways die hard, or should i say, there are always a few die-hards.
