Just wondered, if any of the veterans here ever flew into Johnston or Kanton
Island?
Saw an article in National Geographic on Canton Island in its 1950s heyday,
and i have some photos
of the Johnston Island base. Struck me as a particular kind of
get-away-from-it-all, low stress
environment. Certainly no road rage or violent demonstrations. "Island
Fever" might get to you
though, on a place where you can walk it all in minutes. The islands in
typical military fashion
emulated a Stateside small ( small ) town, with BX, Chapel, school, club,
snack bar, etc.
Canton even had a radio broadcast station for its several hundred
inhabitants, KBIS, which
did an interview with Pres. Nixon when he overnighted there on a flight back
from somewhere.
I think Johnston also had an AFRS broadcast station - the barracks photo
shows a bed with small
radio next to it - but i don't have any details on that.
