One of the failure modes of the R-390A is the coupling
cap feeding the mechanical filters. If it is too leaky or
shorted, it will fry whichever filter is selected.

This is one thing that should absolutely be checked
when evaluating a new-to-you R-390A.

Also, if you are contemplating working on it, a second
one is a good idea, to have a reference
