  By "shape", do you mean the narrow-deep format?  Well, that was not 
odd, but the best way to use limited space.
I do like the appearance of this radio. The BC-652 looks have some 
similarity. The 12K8 is no winner of a mixer tube
tho, at the 20 MHz up region. Which was probably never used anyway for 
aircraft communications - by the time of
the GO-9, the high end of operability was 18 MHz.

The receivers which always interested me were the RAX series. Although
their shape was, to my mind, somewhat odd,  their circuitry had a lot to
recommend  it.

And the HV was far more reasonable at 180 VDC than the 250 VDC of most
other receivers of the period.
