The 'torpedo recover whaleboat' story is from a man in Edmonds, WA, whom
i bought the radio from around maybe,
1990. I'm sure he's not with us still. He told me when the TCH was
replaced, and i believe he said or indicated with the
TCS, that the TCH's were given to Navy electronics students to
disassemble. ( Lot of learning in that? Well, maybe as to
radio construction techniques. ) So apparently he made off with one
instead. Here's to the military people who made off
with uncommon things, instead of letting them be buried, burned, thrown
overboard, or disassembled!
The North Africa photo was in a copy of RADIO NEWS magazine. It was low
res but the sharp eye could identify it. I don't
have the exact date at this moment. I notice also in some listing of
U.S. military radios, the 18M ( =TCH ) was listed with
the note that it is U.K. equipment. The same list also has the V-100
Lend-Lease radio supplied to USSR and China, altho as
i recall in the list it's called "Pilot radio" not V-100, which is kind
of incorrect - Pilot Radio Co. was the manufacturer.
