Thank you everyone for your input. Turns out, it was just the variac (it was brand new, probably that “new car smell” for variacs). The Collins R-390A seems to be fine.

I have another question though. I’ve warmed up the radio on my 120v variac and at least half the tubes light up when I get up to 120v (I spent about an hour slowly turning it up). I don’t have a 240v variac, so my question is: once I have it warmed up to 120v, can I go straight to a 240v outlet without messing up the radio? Is the 120v warm-up enough for the old radio?
