Okay on that. Then it's do-able.
The crystal i tried was out of a boat radio, CR-6 or whatever metal can, not
FT-243, and 2837 kHz. I didn't recognize the channel he ( Mike ) spec'd as a
marine channel crystal,
but i'm only used to dealing with ones i saw in boat radios in the Seattle
area. 
IF you're really curious to try this out, i can try at sometime in the
hopefully near future to find you one when i go thru my crystal stock. I
have about 1.5 bushels of
misc. crystals. ( Yes, they're not usually traded by the bushel. )

If you mean the one that Mike Murphy built, yes.

What I cannot figure out, though, is where he got the 2830 kHz crystal.
