Robin's barn must be extensive on all sides. The "crystal filter" requires a
balanced to ground bridge, or a neutralizing inductance across the crystal
to resonate the crystal holder 
capacitance. At a sufficiently low impedance point, the capacitance
shouldn't matter. 
 And, the cathode of a tube is not in the signal path? I think they call it
"series resonance".

Also this seems like the long way around Robin's Barn.

Seems like the right thing to do with that crystal is to insert it in the
signal path.  I think they call that a "crystal filter".
