There was a lot of TCS activity 25 years or so ago when I was living back on the East Coast (MD). Some guys back then rewired their PAs so that both 1625s remained energized in Phone the same as when operating in the CW mode. It was believed at the time that substituting a 12V6 for the original 12A6 VFO tube provided a beneficial increase in grid drive to the PAs when run this way. Never tried it myself though.
Don’t remember anyone running under xtal control, transmitter or receiver back then.
In the matter of receiver selectivity I always ran a BC-453 “Q-5er” along side my TCS. Still have the same setup but haven’s fired it up in some time now.
