Pat:

Here's one article from 2011 about their GPS jamming capability: http://www.imra.org.il/story.php3?id=53982 . And this one http://thefifthcolumnnews.com/2016/01/iran-us-incident-iran-has-the-ability-to-disrupt-us-gps-systems/ addresses the jamming/spoofing issue I mentioned in my earlier posting. I fully admit I know nothing about the reliability of articles published by either of these outlets so Caveat Amateur.

As for GPS use in cellular tower equipment, it's mainly to synchronize the digital equipment between and among sites, not so much to maintain freq stability. I can imagine the chaos if a sufficiently strong jammer, or multiple dispersed jammers, were to be employed near cell sites. "When all else fails..."

One last item: I've been advocating for NVIS antennas and station capability each year at Gilbert. HF can bail out our cookies if necessary.

Recent news article claims that the Iranian Navy spoofed GPS sigs and lured
our two vessels into their territorial waters prior to capture. DOD has not
confirmed or denied the report.

OHHHHHHHHHHH, yes!!! And the devil internet and the damned computers too...

Some time ago, I read a report from, as I recall it, the Army in which some
high-muckety-muck expressed considerable deep concern that the Army is so
dependent on computerized this and that that it appears to be completely
unable to function if/when those computers, etc., go down.
