I have not found that to be true with the ones I've worked on. There are very few 
components on the plug-in subassemblies, and other than not being able to directly power 
them up out of the radio, they are easily worked on....but then again, you and I may be using 
different understandings of the word "sub-assemblies" too.

Well, in my experience, the entire radio runs awfully hot when left in completely stock 
original condition. I've mentioned before about my experience in reducing the heat by 
reducing the screen voltage to the pentodes and tetrodes in it.

I agree. Besides, the R-390* family were "Collins".....
