The first one was used without tubes, the second was used- incomplete and the third was listed as "new out of the box"

Try this:
The seller himself or an associate on his behalf bidded up the price to the point where nobody would match it.
Perhaps because:
1. He changed his mind about selling
2. He recognised a bidder who he didn't want to sell to, perhaps because of a previous bad deal
