Hi:

In 1984 there were a few guys putting up beacons in the license free (1 Watt & 50' antenna) 160-190 kHz band and the M. 
Lee mod to the ME-61 was to help in tuning that antenna.
Mine was on 175 kHz with call sign LAH (Los Altos Hills).

It occurs to me that if you really want to improve the sensitivity of the ME-61 you might treat it like a Crystal Video 
Radar Warning Receiver.

This could be done in a simple square wave modulation way like in the original Fuzz Buster or more elegantly using one 
of the Analog Devices Synchronous Detectors where signals 100 dB below the noise can be seen a la Lock-in Amplifiers.
The tricky part would be getting high AF isolation between the modulating circuit and the demodulation circuit.  In the 
Fuzz Buster that was easy since there was an X-band waveguide between the two diodes that had high attenuation of the 
audio modulating frequency.
