[Milsurplus] 'King Nine Will Not Return'

'Twilight Zone Radio', a syndicated program offered on some AM stations on
weekends, in this area 

on 4/ 23 presented the episode 'King Nine Will Not Return'.  A veteran USAAF
pilot suffers a breakdown

when he sees a newspaper article about a crash landed WW2 bomber just found.

The story is of course loosely based on the loss of the 'Lady Be Good'
B-24, which overshot Benghasi

airfield due to radio DF error and flew far into the Libyan sand desert. The
plane was found in late

1958. 

 

I recall at 11 years of age fascinated, reading in LIFE magazine the account
of the plane's finding. Many

years later i went and bought the copy of LIFE - the photos are better than
in any of the books.
