[Milsurplus] puzzler - module with glass rod?

The ceramic disc at the base of the rod has a single silvered contact to
the center while the rim is grounded. This assembly appears silver-soldered
or tightly attached to the rod somehow. Measures infinite ohms between the
two disc contacts. The spring at the top just presses on the polished face
of the glass rod and there's no silvered surface or anything to indicate it
is meant as an electrical contact.

So there is only the single wire connection plus ground, both at the base.
