I suspect that the higher ambient temperature rating is actually related to how much drift occurs between equipment start up and the equipment coming up to nominal internal operating temperatures.

And although the crystal holders are identical externally, there are likely some internal differences.  The B models seem to have become extinct as the higher quality A models became the norm everywhere.  I've only got a few CR-1B units, but hundreds of CR-1A units.
