>From what I understand, a semi-polarized capacitor can tolerate a reverse voltage that is higher then the 1.5 volt reverse voltage limit of a standard electrolytic capacitor,  This is due to the cathode having a film that will withstand an inadvertently applied reverse voltage.  But I assume this reverse voltage is much less then the rated capacitor working voltage.  Otherwise the capacitor would be rated as non-polarized.

This is a non-critical application, so I would think any modern ( and assumed much smaller) non-polarized film capacitor of the same value and working voltage should work just fine.

 Subject: [Milsurplus] Semi polarized capacitor

Hi,

I was running a PE-86 Dynamotor that is used in the RC-36 Interphone System when one of the capacitors went up in smoke. Beside the capacitor values that are stamped into the can the word "semi polarized" was also stamped on it. What is a semi polarized cap and what can it be replaced with?

Thank you,

Mark
