I recently acquired a BC-348-Q that had been adapted to use an external 120
V power supply. Unfortunately, the receiver and power supply had parted
company some time previously. After pondering the graphs and tables in older
editions of the ARRL Handbook, Bill Orr's "West Coast" Handbook, and the
Radiotron Designer's Handbook I wondered if there wasn't a quicker way to
design a supply that would deliver 225 Volts at 50 mA using the stuff I had
in my junkbox.
I typed "Power supply design" into Google and came up with a link to
duncanamps.com/psu2/index.html. That site allows you to download for free a
really nifty program called PSU Designer II that runs under Windows and
simulates a power supply using either vacuum tubes or silicon diodes in
full-wave, half-wave or bridge configuration. The designer - a fellow named
Duncan Munro - seems to be an Australian audio enthusiast with an interest
in vacuum tubes. The program takes a little getting used to - read all the
Help files first - but the results accurately predicted what happened when I
wired things up on the bench.
