Well, it was definitely the Azores. As far as a "sand" storm I just kind of
remember what it looked like from the eyes of a 11 year old. 73 - Mike .

Mike, that last part seems somewhat unlikely.  Doubtless your aircraft
landed at Lajes Field on the island of Terceira, in the Atlantic 850 miles
west of Portugal.  I've been there on a ballistic missile submarine back
during the cold war that was med-evacing a crewman back to the US via USAF
flight from Lajes.

The Azores are volcanic.  I just can't see a sandstorm developing there.
