"Discones are pretty wideband, how about the 225-400 MHz military one?
That's definitely badass."
I have one made by Kathrein, about 2' across and about 4' high and damned
near solid steel, rated for winds around 200 MPH, no radials, just welded
steel plates. THAT one is rugged! I'd like to find that in the lower
frequency range, probably too big and heavy to move. Saw a couple of
military discones for sale today, really cool looking, great for field
work, quick deployment stuff, more rugged than the hobby antennas but still
relatively flimsy. By rugged, I'm thinking along the lines of a little
"confidential" UHF dipole I have. About 8" across,
machined from a solid billet of aluminum, elements are a couple inches
thick. Looks more like something you'd tie a ship off to than a little
antenna.
