I met a guy like that in the surplus business a long time ago. He owned a
big outfit in Rochester, New York called MDA or Material Defense Associates.
Lots of cool aircraft stuff including K-14 gun sights for the P-51 Mustang.
Jay Wisler once told a story about asking the owner of MDA, Jerry Bachman,
how much he wanted one of his new in the box gun sights. I recall it was
something like $1500 which was astronomical at the time. Jay picked up one
from the ground nearby that had likely been outside in the not so kind
Rochester weather since the 1950's. Needless to say it was rough. Jerry took
the sight out of his hand and said '$1500 for the new and $1500 for the
junk. Same price. I am the only one who has them so that's the price' and
then he threw the sight against a brick wall and smashed it.
Wow.

Well, you ain't alone, Ray, believe me.
Like the complete jerk we all (may) remember who had some ancient Navy
transmitters, NIB, who was "offering" them on eBay for something like $10K,
when they MIGHT have been worth $500.
Someone I (we?) know actually went to him and offered to buy them for a
reasonable price, and he told him that he would rather destroy them.
What a complete idiot.
Oh, well.
