As to its actual use, the item I mentioned last digest, indicates there were
successful uses of the radio. Wouldn't you love to have interviewed the
members of that
select "club" ?
Its use seems to be NOT included with liferaft equipment but airdropped to
survivors by patrol aircraft.
I'm thinking I recently read some Pacific war account which mentioned the
dropping of the rescue radio but I'll be damned if I can pull up any of the
specifics.
MANY years ago, I recall reading another Pacific sea battles account.
Survivors of some sinking were in a lifeboat, I think - not a raft - and
the account said
with their radio they not only were able to send but were able to hear one
of their ships in communications with elsewhere. This has puzzled me for
years;
the only candidate radio I can think of is the TBX, unless it was one of
those larger RMCA units with LF receiver-transmitter. I don't think I want
to try to look
thru every war book I've read since the 1970s and maybe the clock will run
out without me ever finding this again. Still, it really puzzles me, and I'd
sure like
to read that passage again.
