Still thinning out paper, I read a National Geographic from March 1945.
Excellent article on 'Return to Florence' by a USAAF Lt. who had stayed in
Florence, Italy, as a student before the war.
In his wartime role, he was navigator on a B-26 team assigned to destroy the
rail yards, and explicitly nothing else,
in Florence. This is a well written article by a well educated and
perceptive writer; reminded me somewhat of
Antoine de Saint-Exupery. The mission was entirely successful. But I was
saddened at the end of his account, to
read in an addendum to the article, that the day after the article had
reached Nat'l Geo, Lt. Benjamin McCartney
died of wounds received on another mission. He had received the Air Medal
and D.F.C.
This issue of Nat'l Geo has 5 other WW2 related articles. This is not an ad,
but I will pass it on for $6 mailed Priority.
I cannot keep all the wonderful wartime Nat'l Geos due to their weight. I'm
thinking of buying the all-issues CD, as
I really love the older issues 1920s-1950s. I just wanted to say, don't
overlook those WW2 issues of this mag; there
are some wonderful articles and photos.
