Hue,
The overload problem could be a problem for a single seat aircraft. In an
aircraft with a radio operator, he would just turn down the receiver RF
gain.
Aboard a ship, there are two bearing types, relative and true. Relative
depends upon which direction the ship is headed . The YG antenna rotator was
synced with the ship's stable element so that when the antenna was pointed
toward the north pole (true north), the transmitter would send the code for
South (the direction that an aircraft receiving it would need to fly to get
back to the carrier. This is all independent of the ship's heading, so if
the ship did a tight 360 degree circle, the code received by the aircraft
coming in from the north would never change.
On another subject, does anyone know what RPM the YG antenna rotated at?
