"I use it, but if it changed in the mid 90's then I probably never knew the
good stuff. How was it different?"
No PTFE, different viscosity, poor coverage, short term usability. Looking
for a better way to describe this... The old stuff was about 10% Teflon.
It was great in motors, bearings, guns, slides (on tools, doors, cabinet, et
cetera), mechanical devices (I have a drill chuck oiled with it over a
decade ago, still works like new), you name it. A couple of drops could
literally last years. In fact, my 4 ounce bottle is about 30 years old
now, so little is used. It also has a very unique smell that quickly
identified it, sort of like band-aids. From a marketing point of view, this
is a total disaster!!! If a person buys one bottle every fifty years, the
company has failed.
The new stuff... An odd puke green color, no PTFE, very low viscosity,
migrates where you don't expect it to, peculiar and completely different
odor, personally, I didn't care for it, in similar applications as the old
version, time has been cut from up to years down to days or weeks, I think
the longest I've read on forums of three months in non-critical
applications, critical apps require re-lube on a near daily basis. Described
by those in forums, which can get quite heated regarding the product, as
being an over-priced low quality 3-in-1 type oil cashing in on an old name.
I DID buy some, just in case, you know, MAYBE it would be better! Nope.
One drop, returned the whole mess, ripped the manufacturer (Safariland) a
new one.
I am disgusted and disappointed, and, because I have the old product and
know better, upset.
The company bought the name only, NOT the product.
I read somewhere the DoD approved a replacement for Break Free CLP, typical
cryptic name and alphanumeric designator. I don't recall it offhand, should
be able to find references online, not sure we can get it, though.
