Cleaning out paper, I found some brief sketchy notes I'd jotted down from what my father told me. Wish I'd paid more
attention, asked more. But - "No one is 100%".

"Some days after [ later ? ] [ my ] gun battalion moved to Corsica. You could still see the smoke from Vesuvius [ volcano ].
Position at Foggia had 100 guns, 40 90mm. North of Naples, Baggnoli. Gun operations room was in HQ Battalion; controls
all AA. People thought a 5th Army ammo dump had gone up. Word went out - get your gas mask. No one had considered
it a useful piece. People were running around looking for it, to have it on or nearby. But ash didn't come over city - blew in
other direction. Gun position could see, but mountain [ Vesuvius ] was clouded by a huge cloud of smoke."
