[Milsurplus] OT: Mt. Vesuvius, Italy 1943

Cleaning out paper, I found some brief sketchy notes I'd jotted down from what my father told me. Wish I'd paid more
attention, asked more. But - "No one is 100%".

"Some days after [ later ? ]  [ my ] gun battalion moved to Corsica.  You could still see the smoke from Vesuvius [ volcano ]. 
Position at Foggia had 100 guns, 40  90mm. North of Naples, Baggnoli. Gun operations room was in HQ Battalion; controls 
all AA.  People thought a  5th Army ammo dump had gone up.  Word went out - get your gas mask. No one had considered 
it a useful piece. People were running around looking for it, to have it on or nearby. But ash didn't come over city - blew in 
other direction. Gun position could see, but mountain [ Vesuvius ] was clouded by a huge cloud of smoke."
