The rumor that the ship moved sideways is a wrong interpretation from the pictures showing a battleship firing a salvo.

The "wave" created in front of the guns is caused by the air shock from the firing, not from the movement of the ship.

The military has surplussed the IOWA class guns and fortunately some organizations are preserving them. They are on display of you want to see them.

Here are some places I've visited in the Mid-Atlantic States with guns form the USS Missouri:

A gun form the USS Missouri has been moved to a local county park by me and will be installed in a gun battery:

If course you can see this impressive guns and the associated firing computers on the various battleship museums.

Note the guns displayed at these land batteries are not the original model. The gun batteries had 16 inch 50 caliber Mark 2 guns.

They NAVY realized during the design process that they too heavy for the IOWA Class battleships so new to design a lighter gun, the Mark 7.
