Electronic Industries magazine, Nov. 1942, p. 53:
"A short cut in installation, maintenance, and replacement, this Western Electric
‘command set’ is slid into the belly of Airacobra fighter instead of already cramped
cockpit.”
Photo shows drop down compartment door around 20 x 10 inches, located about 6
inches just to left (ahead) of point of white star on fuselage. Very hard to read
nameplate due to limitations of photo resolution, but it looks like “BC-AR-229”.
( You can check this with the P-39’s battery supply. ) Receiver has chalked on
top, “6823 O.K. 3/21/42” These photos are almost always staged, but for
whatever it’s worth, looks like technician is using a tool to set the frequency of the
receiver via the front panel tune cable connector point. Fixed-tuned in flight?
Maybe for training?
I do not have a scan of this photo at present. I am debating keeping the volume
and others for possible scanning on my own, EVENTUALLY, and then donating
volumes to the noble project of
www.americanradiohistory.com
or just donating them right now and trusting that their scan resolution is all that
could be desired.
