Terminal board mounted components most importantly provide predictable
resistance to shock and vibration problems.
Not so important in commercial and ham gear, but a prime factor in military
equipment. Shipboard and airborne equipments experience some really serious
continuous vibration. Many moons ago when I worked for NAVELEX I used to
have fun testing gear and watching it come apart....
