Agreed, with the exception that the J, N and Q models also omit the antenna alignment control, another cost cutting measure.  The only other obvious difference between the various models is that the -R has a plastic nomenclature tag.
I guess there is some advantage to the point to point wiring of the J, N and Q single ended tube models.  Somewhat easier to modify or repair but I guess we don't maintain these relics because it is easy!

My understanding is that the “later” versions of the BC-348 were the result of a cost-cutting exercise.  Have used both “early” and “later” versions of the radio and
never noted any practical difference in performance.
