I personally don’t find the BC-348 schematic in it’s most common format all that bad.  The BC-342/312 schematics about the same.  The BC-654 a real bear, though as
you said, having to accommodate either a 12 or 6 vdc primary supply and both  positive or negative ground systems depending on what vehicle in which it is installed.  The BC-610 is another bear, every power and control circuit seems to route through a half-dozen different terminal strips in the thing.

I have always found it useful to start off with several "blown up” schematic copies of an unfamiliar radio.  Specific circuits (AGC, B+, muting, etc) can be traced with colored
markers to help mame sense of unfamiliar territory…..
