: happy outcome. Has anyone seen or used the military solid fuel cartridge
: soldering irons from the 50s and 60s?  These are probably equal to a 250
: watt electric, an uncle had one with many cartridges, and it was great
: for fixing gutters and other tinsmithing.

Yes, I used to by them by the dozen from C&H Sales.  I fired one off in a 
vise one day, it heated to a nice red-orange color starting at the primer 
end and and taking a few seconds to get to the other end.
